Freedom: Year 12 Politics and Philosophy taster day

Location: University of Reading, Whiteknights Campus

This event will challenge your thinking and allow you to explore a range of philosophical and political perspectives. Topics will include: What is freedom?  Does freedom require equality, or is it impossible to be both free and equal? What is sovereignty and what are the links between sovereignty and democracy? Are we free, and our lives meaningful, only if we pursue values that we ourselves create, or if we pursue objectively valuable goals?

You will also have the opportunity to meet and talk with current students at the University, and find out more about life here at Reading. Suitable for students studying Politics/Philosophy at A level or who wish to study them at degree level.

Film, Theatre and Television Year 12 Summer taster course

Exploring Identity in Film/TV and Theatre in Theory and Practice

As the success of films like Attack the Block, television series like The Inbetweeners, and theatre plays like The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time show, representations of identity matter in today's film/TV and theatre. This two-day event will examine such representations both theoretically and practically.

A short lecture and seminar discussion will introduce key questions concerning representations of identity; such as:

• What kinds of representations do contemporary film/TV and theatre offers us, and which are absent?

• Why does it matter how we are represented within these cultural media?

• How can we use film/TV and theatre-making to represent ourselves/each other?

The discussion will be informed by, for example, ideas about femininity and masculinity, race and ethnicity, age, (dis)ability, technology, and how these affect each other.

You will then explore these questions and ideas through practical workshops by making a short film or performance, using specialist equipment and facilities.  Application forms can be found using the following link:

Discovery Days at BNP Paribas - Banking/Finance

This year, BNP Paribas opened its doors to students studying GCSE and A-levels (year 11-13) to attend the ‘Discovery Days’ in London.

Students spent two days at the bank, learning about the basics of the industry and its future opportunities. Participants were immersed in the BNP Paribas culture and day-to-day life, through interactive presentations, team building exercise, trading games, skills sessions and work shadowing.

process. Our new Discovery Days will help students with career choices and, as importantly, provide the first step in what will hopefully develop into a long lasting relationship with our bank.”

Thanks to its success, the Discovery Days will be running again in July 2016.

Application guideline:

• CVs should be one page of A4

• Cover letters should be a maximum length of 200 words

• Candidates should use their cover letter to let us know why they want to attend our Discovery Daysand take their first steps into banking.

Top 10 tips for your son or daughter

1.     Start research early – there are a lot of higher education options to choose from!

2.     Know the deadlines – for some courses, the application deadline is almost a year in advance of when the course starts.

3.     Browse through courses – so they can work out what they would enjoy or be interested in.

4.     Go to UCAS events and course provider open days – speak to us and higher education staff to get answers to their questions.

5.     Check entry requirements – make sure they can get the grades they need to get a place on a course.

6.     Redraft their personal statement – get plenty of feedback and refine it until they’re happy.

7.     Understand student finance – so they can make the best arrangements to fund their studies.

8.     Be prepared for results day – make sure they’re prepared for all the possible outcomes.
