University of Southampton Design Triathlon

Type: Residential taster courses (eg Summer schools), University taster courses

Duration: 03 July 2016 - 07 July 2016

University of Southampton Design Triathlon

The Design Triathlon is a residential course for Year 12 students interested in studying engineering at university. The Summer School will introduce students to the three areas of Ship Science, Aeronautics and Astronautics and Mechanical Engineering. Over four days, students will design and build a glider, a Greenpower car and a fastcraft for water as part of a team. Talks, workshops and seminars from staff and students in the Faculty of Engineering and the Environment provide insight into the wealth of careers and opportunities that an engineering degree can provide.

Participants live in university halls of residence for the week, and are mentored by current undergraduate and postgraduate students, giving you a unique opportunity to find out what life is like at university. The summer school is a great opportunity to get a taste for engineering ahead of university applications. It is free to attend and is aimed at Year 12 students matching some (or all) of the following criteria:

  • will be the first generation in their family to attend university
  • have achieved at least 5 A/A*s at GCSE, 5 credit passes at Standard Grade or equivalent
  • are taking relevant subjects in relation to Engineering (e.g. Maths, Physics and other Science subjects)
  • attend schools or colleges with a low overall A-level, Higher/Advanced Higher (or equivalent) point score and/or schools or colleges with low progression to higher education
  • come from neighbourhoods with low overall progression rates to higher education or high levels of socio economic deprivation
  • are under the age of 18 at the time of the summer school

Applications for the 2016 course are now open.  Please note that applications close on Friday 18th March, and you will be notified of the outcome of your application by Friday 8th April.

Please note that we are only able offer places to a maximum of 3 pupils per school/college.
